Covid Caution at the Chiro Domain
We are being cautious at The Chiropractic Domain following the latest lockdown in Melbourne. Please continue to check in with the QR code, washing your hands and maintaining your distance when possible. If you have symptoms, please get tested and reschedule your appointment to a quiet time after your negative result is returned and wear a mask to prevent transmission of other viruses that may mean we'd have to close.
Celebrating Mums of The Chiropractic Domain
We see a lot of mums at The Chiropractic Domain and we often see them put their families first when it comes to wellbeing. In recognition to the mums of the clinic community, we are offering all mums $20.00 off their next appointment if they are already a registered patients with us.For mums who have not seen us before (or not for 3+ years) you can buy a voucher to have the first two chiropractic appointments with us for just $99 (normally $193 - a 50% saving!)Why for the first two appointments? The first visit is all about collecting mums health history, doing posture assessment, sEMG scans, x-rays (if indicated), neurological and orthopaedic testing. After all that, Dr Paula will write a detailed and personalised report of the findings and present it at the second visit - that's when mum can make an informed choice chiropractic. Treatment will be provided then as well.
Infants Delivered Via Instrument-Assisted Birth May Have Lower Cervical Range of Motion
A 2018 study showed that at vacuum-assisted delivery and Caesarean section deliveries were associated with “a higher prevalence of reduced cervical spine ROM [range of motion]"This study showed that normal range of motion was not particularly common after vaginal birth without interventions, but it also showed that reduced cervical spine (neck) range of motion was more common in vacuum assisted births and caesarean sections.
Chiropractic and the breast/chest feeding baby
We have 12 cranial nerves that begin at the brain and brainstem, travel throughout the skull and exit via the small holes (foramen and canals) to supply voluntary and involuntary muscles for movement, and sensory information like sight, smell, taste, touch, hearing, and balance. Breastfeeding is no small task for the small human. It “is a synchronized event requiring the infant to suck, swallow and breathe. Performing this coordinated event requires 6 of the 12 cranial nerves; 22 cranial bones articulate at 34 sutures/places; and 60 muscles that are voluntary and involuntary.” The human body is incredibly complex and while the art of chiropractic celebrates this, the science of chiropractic is still being studied and proven.
Pain distribution in school aged children
Musculoskeletal pain experienced by adults is reasonably well researched, but pain in children is not. Last year the findings of a three-year study performed in Denmark was published looking at the pain distribution patterns of children between 8 and 16 years old. This study finished with 1,169 participants – which is a significant sample size when looking at children of that age across all industrialised countries. For the purposes of the report, pain was defined as at least one week of pain during a school year. While we know that “pain can start early in life and increases throughout adolescence,” it is the specifics offered up by this study that make it noteworthy.Other concerns that accompany childhood and adolescent pain include negative impacts on “sports participation and physical activity in childhood” as well as “psychological distress, poor relations with peers, absence from school, puberty and decreased quality of life.” To this end, it is important for both parents and clinicians to know when and how to bring in interventions.
Infant shoulder dysfunction
A recent Australian study revealed that a whopping 71.8% of 178 infants examined at a paediatric only chiropractic clinic between January 1, 2010 to 31st December, 2010 had glenohumeral joint dysfunction. The glenohumeral joint is the shoulder ball and socket joint. ...The take-away is that prolonged crying should be investigated, and chiropractors are trained to assess the entire musculoskeletal system.
Are growing pains normal?
Firstly, what are “growing pains”? They are the leg muscle pains experienced by children and adolescents often at the calf, front of thigh or behind the knees, that do not have an obvious cause. Despite the name, growing is not what causes the pain, except in the case of Server’s disease, where the calf bone has grown faster than the Achilles tendon. Growing pains are often worse in the afternoon or evening. Sometimes, the pain can wake a child from their sleep. The cause is not known, but running, climbing, or jumping during the day might increase the risk of leg pain at night.
Kids quality of life improves with chiropractic care.
A recent U.S. Study found that “following a course of chiropractic care, the QoL [Quality of Life] of children (8-17 years old) improved beyond chance as assessed by their parents."The study used the “Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System” or PROMIS collection method and surveyed 724 parents, 80% of which were under chiropractic care themselves. The participants presented to chiropractic clinics for their children for a combination of wellness care as well as relieving symptoms. The researchers noted that “All PROMISE QoL [quality of life] measures changed from T1 [baseline] to T2 [comparison point] in a statistically significant manner. More importantly, the changes were associated with improvements in QoL. [1]”The paper specifically looked at anxiety, depression, fatigue, pain and physical function, with anxiety, pain, and physical function showing the greatest improvements under care.Another interesting note is this: we know that parent-proxy questionnaires give some room for error in terms of estimations. However, Alcantara et al cite other research that indicated that parents tend to over-estimate their child’s Quality of Life. Therefore, the difference could be even greater than we currently think. There is a lot more to be done in the way of research with it comes to chiropractic for kids, and chiropractic for wellness.

New Year New Me?
“A new year a new me?” you might be asking. Well no, it’s probably the same ole you, same ole me, but maybe you can try to be a bit kinder to yourself this year. That’s my suggestion; that’s my theme. So one way you can do that, is do just ONE SMALL THING for yourself. Big audacious goals are great, but sometimes they’re overwhelming, but one tiny habit change can make a huge difference when it is something that is sustainable.

Hello lovely people,
we’re in the second week of January, things are just starting to pick up and get going.
Big audacious goals are great, but
some times they’re overwhelming, but one tiny habit change can make a huge difference when it is something that is sustainable.
So as a suggestion, a few things that have worked for me.
- I started setting my alarm 15 minutes earlier
- I started making my breakfast the night before
- Booking an exercise class, or making an appointment with someone keeps me accountable
- Make sure that you always book that next appointment before you leave the clinic; so that you don't go backwards
Look after yourself and I will see you very soon!

Dr Paula

December 2020 Update from The Chiropractic Domain
Wellness and Wisdom NewsletterDecember 2020 Edition
Well, it is finally in December in the year we thought never end. We all know how topsy-turvy and challenging it has been, so I am not going dwell on that.
I would love to tell you about some exciting offers and updates this month:
For those who are starting to think about Christmas and looking for a few ideas we have the famous Dr Graeme hand-held massagers.
These are the ones I use on the clinic but mostly I recommend them as a fabulous way to take a layer of tension out for those super tight muscles that get tight form poor posture or over-use in just a few minutes
We have some gift-wrapped and ready to go home for someone you care about for $89 each
Also, some of you may have seen our stock of “Archies” supporting and fashionable thongs. With hot weather beginning its better to be in these than bare feet or completely flat things…after many weeks they can save your feet and legs and knees from needless aching to do not enough support. They also make great stocking filler and extremely reasonable priced at $35. Great for both adult and kids they come in a range of colors and sizes. You can come in- clinic to try one or both products can be bought online for click and collect
Some examples of cases we have been working with recent with positive results include ,
- neck and shoulders issues
- headaches
- knee joint aggravation and post-surgical swelling
- jaw pain
Some of you may not know that in Dr Paula’s treatment approach, she also has been using “Cold laser therapy” (Low-level Pulsed Laser therapy). She has recently upgraded her laser to one that is higher quality and more efficient. She has been using as an adjunct or Chiropractic Care in cases of pain and inflammation from injury or a flare-up of a chronic issues.
This year we are working right up until Christmas eve , doing an extra Shift on Thursday 24h December from 8:30-11:30am to make sure you can get in your final adjustment for this amazing 2020 year we have all experienced.

Chiropractic Life Mt Gambier
In the October long weekend there will be a change of management at the clinic and it will be taken over by a company called Chiropractic Life. Now, you may not have heard of them before but Chiropractic Life owns a number of regional based clinics across Australia and it is owned by a colleague of mine Dr Adam McKenzie who was a Casterton boy born and bred originally. You'll be pleased to know that Chiropractic Life has a very similar approach and ethos to what we and you have known at The Chiropractic Domain. Please indulge me while I'm reading my notes to help me through this:The most important thing I believe for you to know is that Dr Ashley will remain and she will be continuing under Chiropractic Life along with being supported by Dee and Sonia. For those of you who often see me, I will be continuing my next two rotations to Mt Gambier and finishing up in December. I expect that you'll only notice minor changes around the clinic obviously the business name and the logo will change and the branding but Dr Ashley and Dee and Sonia will be still providing their care and they as they always have. So really it will be business as usual or adjustments as usual. On a personal note; because it is a personal thing when you sell a business, I'd just like to share with you that when I bought Mt Gambier from Dr Neville Creed 13 years ago, I was full of energy and and the idea of course was to develop young associates and try and teach them the way that I had approached chiropractic career in my other clinics at that time. I was halfway through my pregnancy my first pregnancy; crazy yes I know, and over the years we've had lots of lovely associates come and serve and, there have been times when there's been gaps in that and I have needed to step in all amongst managing my own clinic at Goodwood and juggling what ended up being five children in the end. So now my family has grown and my older children are spreading their wings. Simone the eldest has recently gone to university to study chiropractic herself and so a while ago she stopped being my full-time clinic manager and we have missed her expertise and her assistance. also my three younger children are now at primary school very busy and my parents are in their 80s so recently when Adam approached me and asked me if I was interested in making a change I came to the conclusion that now was the right time of my life to do that.
What is this announcement?
After 13 years The Chiropractic Domain will become Chiropractic Life
Who is Chiropractic Life?
Chiropractic Life is a group of chiropractic practices around Australia owned by Dr Adam McKenzie.
Who will be my chiropractor?
We are very happy to be able to tell you the Dr Ashley will remain your chiropractor as she is joining the Chiropractic Life team!
Dee and Sonia will continue to support Dr Ashley in continuing your care.
What if I see Dr Paula?
Dr Paula will continue to travel on her usual rotation for the remainder on 2020. Next year you will need to book in to see Dr Ashley for your adjustments instead.
Dr Paula will only be visiting Mt Gambier to spend time with her friends and family.
What is going to change?
You may not notice a lot of changes for the time being. Chiropractic Life and The Chiropractic Domain have more similarities than they do differences.
The initial changes you'll notice will be to aesthetics as logos and colours are updated.
Why now?
It has been 13 years since Creed Chiropractic became The Chiropractic Domain and in that time Dr Paula's family has grown and the energy once held for developing young chiropractors has transitioned to raising children. The support Dr Paula had from previous practice manager Simone has also reduced since Simone starting studying Chiropractic herself in 2019.
Dr Paula and her whole team are incredibly proud of what has been achieved, and though some sadness is felt we are all very excited about the change to Chiropractic Life.
When is this happening?
The October long weekend is the official change over period.
How do I book in?
To book in Goodwood you can book online or call 8272 4555

🚫COMMON MISTAKES OF FOAM ROLLING🚫
1 - Do NOT leave it unattended around a puppy☠2 - You're too quick. To get the benefits you need to go SLOW🐢 and hold the pressure on those juciy trigger points!3 - You're holding your breathe. When you do you also hold more tension in your muscles! We are trying to relax them right?? Top tip count using your breathes not by seconds!🙃4 - You're trying to roll only the sore areas - remember sometimes the area of pain is not the area of dysfunction. Keep in mind not to foam roll on a fresh injury!🤕5 - You're starting at the wrong end and rolling the wrong direction. Alway roll towards the heart. It allows for better blood flood and waste drainage. Get those toxins out☢Also keep an eye out for upcoming dates for foam roller classes - back by popular demand!🙌
STEPtember 2020
Now STEPtember is a fundraiser for cerebral palsy for those young people who cannot through wish or want to be able to move in the way they would necessarily like to due to their condition. So I thought it was a great excuse for my team to once again get movingand to meet the challenge of 10,000 steps per day.Now we had a competition last year within the team and out CA at Mount Gamber; Sonia absolutely smashed us and did an enormous amount of steps. I was right up her alley not far behind her but she was the step queen. But the message I want to bring to you is it doesn't matter so much how many thousands of steps you managed to achieve over the whole month but consistency of making sure you're moving enough each day is actually part of changing your life because if you can keep that habit up that means that overall you're going to be moving and our body is going to benefit in just so many ways.So dust off your footwear go get yourself some new footwear there's a number of great places you could check that out athlete's foot which is in both clinic locations. You could look at the running company which is on Unley road there's also another great company called Sportitude. People who will actually pay the attention to get you good footwear so that when you do walk you have greater comfort. If there's any issues that you notice that evolve from doing extra walking please come and talk to Dr Ashley and I there may be a few little mechanicaltweaks we can help you make to get going so I'd love you to put your best foot forward. Join us if you want to keep up with the tally of how we're all goingpay attention to the clinic and the Facebook posts and get moving for spring and we might just raise a little bit of money for our lovely young people who suffer with cerebral palsy tooTake care everybody
