How we perceive pain alters how we feel pain.

When we experience long-term pain, it can cause us to become hypersensitive to future pain.

When we experience long-term pain, it can cause us to become hypersensitive to future pain.🧠It is our brains way of trying to protect us, but those with pain without apparent injury will know that it takes a physical, emotional and mental toll. The good news is that pain can lessen when we feel safe, and changing how we view it can alter how intensely we feel it. 🙌Next time you feel yourself entering a pain spiral, where your thoughts and feelings are contributing to physical pain and your physical pain is contributing to negative thoughts, feelings, beliefs and actions, find yourself a quiet place, take long, deep breathes and try these affirmations to calm your nervous system down.

🌻 "My body is trying to communicate with me. I will listen to it."🌻 "I am healthy and resilient; this is only temporary."

Of course, breathing and affirmations is not the only step in managing pain. It is a beneficial additive to managing pain in conjunction with other modalities including exercise, good nutrition, and manual therapies including chiropractic.[button size='medium' style='' text='Book an Appointment' icon='' icon_color='4f758b' link='http://thechiropracticdomain.com.au/book-now/' target='_self' color='4f758b' hover_color='e2e868' border_color='' hover_border_color='' background_color='4f758b' hover_background_color='e2e868' font_style='normal' font_weight='100' text_align='center' margin='']

Updated Hours from February 2022

From February our opening days will change, and some lunch time adjusting opportunities will be added.

25 Years as a Chiropractor

This week I have been reflecting and celebrating my 25 years of being a registered chiropractor. There’s a reason they call it being in practice; I am constantly gaining experience & wisdom and practising my skills, knowing that the learning never stops! I am very grateful to have found my calling at the tender age of 10 – though it took me until I was 23 to achieve my goal to graduate. Thousands of adjustments later I still have the passion to serve for many more years.
I am so appreciative of the communities I have served in Littlehampton, Mt Barker, Mt Gambier, and Goodwood since 1997 and recognise the trust you have placed in me with your health and your families wellbeing.

We're changing practice management software

Across the rest of January, we are upgrading our software to a new system. This may mean we need a few extra seconds while you’re paying and booking, so please be patient and we learn to navigate the new system.

You will also notice a change to the online booking page soon, but we hope that you will come to find it familiar and easy to use with time. If you do have any trouble, please don’t hesitate to call us and book in the old fashioned way!

Please be assured that your personal data will remain safe and secure and backed up, and none of your health data from The Chiropractic Domain or Lisa Scarfo will be affected.

Living with Community Transmission

Since the South Australian borders open and we are now all living with Covid spreading in the community, it has felt like a big shift in attitude, but there has not been a big shift in the public health advice, so we want to assure you that we will continue our Covid-Safe measures until advice changes.

This means that;

  • masks are required for all patients over the age of 12 while inside The Chiropractic Domain (unless you have a medical exception)
  • QR code check-ins are required upon arrival
  • please continue to hand wash or sanitise
  • Staff temperature checks are done frequently
  • Dr Paula wears a respirator while you’re in the smaller office with her
  • All staff wear masks at all times in the building
  • Adjusting tables are cleaned between each patient
  • Regular sanitising of shared areas, pens and equipment is still occurring.

If you are unwell and have been a close contact of someone with Covid, please do not attend the practice and contact SA Health for guidance on testing and quarantining.

If you are unwell, but have tested negative to Covid-19, and have advice from SA Health that you do not need to isolate, please give us a call to arrange your appointment to be moved to a quiet time of day, away from others who may otherwise be concerned.

We will continue to follow the SA Government advice as it is updated and are grateful to be able to support your health and wellbeing throughout this pandemic.

Gardening Tips for the Chiropractic Conscious Gardener

Let's look at some of the benefits of gardening you can enjoy physically, mentally and emotionally from just a little time in the garden.

[siteorigin_widget class="SiteOrigin_Widget_Hero_Widget"] [/siteorigin_widget]
[siteorigin_widget class="Inked_Divider_SO_Widget"] [/siteorigin_widget]

Gardening has been shown to be beneficial for your physical, emotional and mental wellbeing. Let's look at some gardening tips to make the most of those benefits and prevent aches and pains afterwards as much as we can.

[siteorigin_widget class="Inked_Divider_SO_Widget"] [/siteorigin_widget]
[siteorigin_widget class="SiteOrigin_Widget_Image_Widget"] [/siteorigin_widget]
[siteorigin_widget class="Inked_Divider_SO_Widget"] [/siteorigin_widget]

Warm up

Gardening can be great exercise, so warming up is essential. You can follow Dr Paula's warm up if you're not sure where to start.

[siteorigin_widget class="Inked_Divider_SO_Widget"] [/siteorigin_widget]

Heavy lifting tips:

Gardening does sometimes mean lifting heavy and awkward objects, so know you limits, ask for help when you need it and make sure to engage your core muscles to prevent injury.

[siteorigin_widget class="Inked_Divider_SO_Widget"] [/siteorigin_widget]
[siteorigin_widget class="SiteOrigin_Widget_Image_Widget"] [/siteorigin_widget]
[siteorigin_widget class="Inked_Divider_SO_Widget"] [/siteorigin_widget]
[siteorigin_widget class="SiteOrigin_Widget_Image_Widget"] [/siteorigin_widget]
[siteorigin_widget class="Inked_Divider_SO_Widget"] [/siteorigin_widget]

Ask for help

One of the benefits of gardening is that it can be social, but also a gardening tip is to ask for help. Whether it is to lift a heavy or awkward object, or to keep you company, asking for help when you need it is important for all of us.

[siteorigin_widget class="Inked_Divider_SO_Widget"] [/siteorigin_widget]

Avoid repetitive postures and movements

Try to vary your bodies position as often as you can. Repetitive movements can lead to strains, especially if the movement is not one your body is used to.

[siteorigin_widget class="Inked_Divider_SO_Widget"] [/siteorigin_widget]
[siteorigin_widget class="SiteOrigin_Widget_Image_Widget"] [/siteorigin_widget]
[siteorigin_widget class="Inked_Divider_SO_Widget"] [/siteorigin_widget]
[siteorigin_widget class="SiteOrigin_Widget_Image_Widget"] [/siteorigin_widget]
[siteorigin_widget class="Inked_Divider_SO_Widget"] [/siteorigin_widget]

Stay hydrated!

Being out the in the garden can lead to dehydration from the sun and heat, or just because sometimes you might forget to grab a drink, so keep a water bottle filled and close by while you're in the garden.

[siteorigin_widget class="Inked_Divider_SO_Widget"] [/siteorigin_widget]

Take regular breaks

Regular breaks can prevent fatigue that may lead to injury. Pausing for a cup of tea, to reapply sunscreen and to stretch is a great idea for every gardener.

[siteorigin_widget class="Inked_Divider_SO_Widget"] [/siteorigin_widget]
[siteorigin_widget class="SiteOrigin_Widget_Image_Widget"] [/siteorigin_widget]
[siteorigin_widget class="Inked_Divider_SO_Widget"] [/siteorigin_widget]
[siteorigin_widget class="SiteOrigin_Widget_Image_Widget"] [/siteorigin_widget]
[siteorigin_widget class="Inked_Divider_SO_Widget"] [/siteorigin_widget]

Use the right tools

The right tool for the job can mean the difference between a job done well and a job not completed because you hurt yourself. If you don't have the right tool for the job, borrow from a friend or head to your local hire shop.

[siteorigin_widget class="Inked_Divider_SO_Widget"] [/siteorigin_widget]

Just being out in the garden has so many benefits both mental and physical! Activation of the parasympathetic nervous system (the rest and restore side of your nervous system) is essential for mental, emotional and physical resilience, so we strongly advise that everyone gets out into the garden for short bursts, even if you don't have a green thumb.

That being said, if you do find yourself sore and achey after gardening, please book an appointment to adsress the pain, and discuss how we can support your gardening goals without  leaving you in pain.

Incredible Benefits of Gardening

Let's look at some of the benefits of gardening you can enjoy physically, mentally and emotionally from just a little time in the garden.

[siteorigin_widget class="Inked_Divider_SO_Widget"] [/siteorigin_widget]

Gardening has been shown to be beneficial for your physical, emotional and mental wellbeing. Let's look at some of the benefits of gardening you can enjoy from just a little time in the garden.

[siteorigin_widget class="SiteOrigin_Widget_Image_Widget"] [/siteorigin_widget]
[siteorigin_widget class="Inked_Divider_SO_Widget"] [/siteorigin_widget]

1. Improve Your Mood

Gardening, and better yet, just being out in the garden has been shown to reduce stress, improve your mood and reduce the need for pain killers.

[siteorigin_widget class="Inked_Divider_SO_Widget"] [/siteorigin_widget]
[siteorigin_widget class="SiteOrigin_Widget_Image_Widget"] [/siteorigin_widget]
[siteorigin_widget class="Inked_Divider_SO_Widget"] [/siteorigin_widget]
[siteorigin_widget class="SiteOrigin_Widget_Image_Widget"] [/siteorigin_widget]
[siteorigin_widget class="Inked_Divider_SO_Widget"] [/siteorigin_widget]

2. Get Some Vitamin D

Vitamin D is a hormone that is essential for strong bones and muscle use by controlling calcium levels. Sunlight is the best natural source of vitamin D.

Just a few minutes (2-10) each day in the mid morning is recommended, but remember to slip, slop, slap, seek, and slide if you're going to be out in the garden for more than that, or in the height of the summer sun!

The body can only absorb a limited amount of vitamin D at a time. Spending extra time in the sun will not increase vitamin D levels - but will increase your risk of skin cancer. Overexposure to UV is never recommended, even for people who have vitamin D deficiency.

[siteorigin_widget class="Inked_Divider_SO_Widget"] [/siteorigin_widget]

3. Help to Manage Mental Illness

If you have mental illness, 10 minutes in the garden isn't going to cure you alone; but including it in your mental health plan may be beneficial. Both UK and Japanese studies have shown that including "green therapy" into your mental health plan improves relaxation, reduces anxiety and reduces depression.

[siteorigin_widget class="Inked_Divider_SO_Widget"] [/siteorigin_widget]
[siteorigin_widget class="SiteOrigin_Widget_Image_Widget"] [/siteorigin_widget]
[siteorigin_widget class="Inked_Divider_SO_Widget"] [/siteorigin_widget]
[siteorigin_widget class="SiteOrigin_Widget_Image_Widget"] [/siteorigin_widget]
[siteorigin_widget class="Inked_Divider_SO_Widget"] [/siteorigin_widget]

4. It is easy exercise!

We are always encouraging movement and exercise and looking for ways to add extra movement to our day. Getting a work-out in the garden can be as gentle or as  intense as you like. If you're up to it a big building and planting project means heavy lifting, lots of squats and lots of steps. If you're looking for a gentle workout, a gentle walk in the garden is beneficial too!

[siteorigin_widget class="Inked_Divider_SO_Widget"] [/siteorigin_widget]

5. Can lead to healthier food choices

Is there any better feeling that harvesting and eating your home grown herbs, fruits and vegetables? They taste better than shop bought, and though sometimes they might be uglier than their shop counterparts, but the feeling of accomplishment is amazing.

[siteorigin_widget class="Inked_Divider_SO_Widget"] [/siteorigin_widget]
[siteorigin_widget class="SiteOrigin_Widget_Image_Widget"] [/siteorigin_widget]
[siteorigin_widget class="Inked_Divider_SO_Widget"] [/siteorigin_widget]
[siteorigin_widget class="SiteOrigin_Widget_Image_Widget"] [/siteorigin_widget]
[siteorigin_widget class="Inked_Divider_SO_Widget"] [/siteorigin_widget]

6. Get the family together

Gardening can be social! Hang out with your family away from the TV, or if they aren't into gardening with you, community gardens are all over Adelaide and they're a great way to interact with others with similar interests.

Check out the Goody Patch in Goodwood.

[siteorigin_widget class="Inked_Divider_SO_Widget"] [/siteorigin_widget]

7+ Reduce stress, fear, anger and sadness, as well as reducing blood pressure, pulse rate and muscle tension

Covid Caution at the Chiro Domain

We are being cautious at The Chiropractic Domain following the latest lockdown in Melbourne. Please continue to check in with the QR code, washing your hands and maintaining your distance when possible. If you have symptoms, please get tested and reschedule your appointment to a quiet time after your negative result is returned and wear a mask to prevent transmission of other viruses that may mean we'd have to close.

[siteorigin_widget class="SiteOrigin_Widget_Image_Widget"] [/siteorigin_widget]
[siteorigin_widget class="Inked_Divider_SO_Widget"] [/siteorigin_widget]
[siteorigin_widget class="SiteOrigin_Widget_Image_Widget"] [/siteorigin_widget]

No Symptoms & No Melbourne Visits.

For most of our patients, nothing is changing. If you haven't been to greater Melbourne and you don't have any symptoms, please book and attend as normal.

  1. Wash your hands or use sanitiser when entering The Chiropractic Domain
  2. Use the QR Code inside to check in at The Chiropractic Domain
  3. Please maintain a 1.5 metre distance from others while inside the building.
  4. To help maintain distance, please do not bring other visitors with you if you can avoid it.

Of course, being adjusted means that that distance can't be maintained between you and Dr Paula, so please let us know if you would prefer a mask be worn during your appointment.

We will continue to follow the health advice from the government to ensure your safety and keep our state open.

If you have concerns about coming to your appointment, please call us so that we can support you in keeping your spine aligned and your body functioning well to help maintain your health and wellbeing.

[siteorigin_widget class="Inked_Divider_SO_Widget"] [/siteorigin_widget]

You Have Symptoms, But No Melbourne Visits.

If you have the following symptoms please get tested and isolate until you receive a negative result. Please call us to let us know and reschedule following your negative test result.

  • fever
  • dry cough
  • sore throat
  • loss of taste or smell

[siteorigin_widget class="SiteOrigin_Widget_Image_Widget"] [/siteorigin_widget]

If you are symptomatic, but received a negative result, please speaks to us so that we can schedule your appointment for a quiet period in our day. Please wear a mask and we will too. Though Covid-19 is well controlled in South Australia, if Dr Paula gets even a sniffly nose, we'd have to close until she returns a negative Covid-19 result, so following these steps keeps us adjusting and supporting our clinic community.

1 - Do NOT leave it unattended around a puppy☠2 - You're too quick. To get the benefits you need to go SLOW🐢 and hold the pressure on those juciy trigger points!3 - You're holding your breathe. When you do you also hold more tension in your muscles! We are trying to relax them right?? Top tip count using your breathes not by seconds!🙃4 - You're trying to roll only the sore areas - remember sometimes the area of pain is not the area of dysfunction. Keep in mind not to foam roll on a fresh injury!🤕5 - You're starting at the wrong end and rolling the wrong direction. Alway roll towards the heart. It allows for better blood flood and waste drainage. Get those toxins out☢Also keep an eye out for upcoming dates for foam roller classes - back by popular demand!🙌

STEPtember 2020

Now STEPtember is a fundraiser for cerebral palsy for those young people who cannot through wish or want to be able to move in the way they would necessarily like to due to their condition. So I thought it was a great excuse for my team to once again get movingand to meet the challenge of 10,000 steps per day.Now we had a competition last year within the team and out CA at Mount Gamber; Sonia absolutely smashed us and did an enormous amount of steps. I was right up her alley not far behind her but she was the step queen. But the message I want to bring to you is it doesn't matter so much how many thousands of steps you managed to achieve over the whole month but consistency of making sure you're moving enough each day is actually part of changing your life because if you can keep that habit up that means that overall you're going to be moving and our body is going to benefit in just so many ways.So dust off your footwear go get yourself some new footwear there's a number of great places you could check that out athlete's foot which is in both clinic locations.  You could look at the running company which is on Unley road there's also another great company called Sportitude. People who will actually pay the attention to get you good footwear so that when you do walk you have greater comfort. If there's any issues that you notice that evolve from doing extra walking please come and talk to Dr Ashley and I there may be a few little mechanicaltweaks we can help you make to get going so I'd love you to put your best foot forward. Join us if you want to keep up with the tally of how we're all goingpay attention to the clinic and the Facebook posts and get moving for spring and we might just raise a little bit of money for our lovely young people who suffer with cerebral palsy tooTake care everybody

We are at the beginning of September and technically we're at the beginning of Spring; thank goodness it is good to come out of the dark and the cold even though it's still a bit nippy. So traditionally this time of year people start to come out of the woodwork and get moving and I really want to encourage you to do that, this year of all years has been a time when people have felt perhaps a little bit down have been out of their groove
due to the epidemic which we don't even need to name,  and i just want to let you know that at The Chiropractic Domain this year once more
we are participating in STEPtember. Now STEPtember is a fundraiser for cerebral palsy for those young people who cannot through wish or want to be able to move in the way they would necessarily like to due to their condition. So I thought it was a great excuse for my team to once again get moving
and to meet the challenge of 10,000 steps per day.
Now we had a competition last year within the team and out CA at Mount Gamber; Sonia absolutely smashed us and did an enormous amount of steps. I was right up her alley not far behind her but she was the step queen. But the message I want to bring to you is it doesn't matter so much how many thousands of steps you managed to achieve over the whole month but consistency of making sure you're moving enough each day is actually part of changing your life because if you can keep that habit up that means that overall you're going to be moving and our body is going to benefit in just so many ways.

People who will actually pay the attention to get you good footwear so that when you do walk you have greater comfort.
If there's any issues that you notice that evolve from doing extra walking please come and talk to Dr Ashley and I there may be a few little mechanical
tweaks we can help you make to get going so I'd love you to put your best foot forward. Join us if you want to keep up with the tally of how we're all going
